The Blue and Gold Banquet and the Friends of Scouting Campaign Sunday, February 22, from 5-7pm

Pack 471 Families,

Every year Cub Scouts celebrate the Blue and Gold Banquet. It is a celebration to honor the pack’s anniversary and the birthday of Cub Scouts. In nearly all packs, the blue and gold banquet is the highlight of the year. It brings families together for an evening of fun and cheer. The event is packed with special events and entertainment to thank pack leaders and other adults who have helped the pack and inspire the leaders, Scouts and parents.

This year the highlights will include:

Father and son cake competition
Voting on “Best in Show” Pinewood Derby cars (so remember to bring your pinewood derby cars)
Den Table Centerpiece competition
Photo Opportunities

This year we have special prizes from the generous people at Yogli Mogli for the winners of the Cake Competition and for the Best in Show Competition!

Shanes Rib Shack is going to cater the dinner again at the Garrison Mill Cafeteria.  We are asking for $5.00 per person attending for adults, scouts and siblings, while those 5 and under attend for free.  You can pay via the pack website or at the door.

As with most banquets there is also an opportunity to raise money for a good cause. Each Pack is given a goal to raise money for Friends of Scouting. Friends of Scouting helps secure the operating funds needed by the Atlanta Area Council to provide the many services offered to support unit programs, such as training, insurance, program materials, advancement materials, camping facilities and programs, Council and district activities, and much more. While there is a push and celebrating as we reach our goal, it is a voluntary gift. It is tax deductable and provides first class programs and facilities for our scouts to use.

I want to encourage all families to contribute to Friends of Scouting. Other foundations and grants often contribute based on the % of members (registered scouts & leaders) who contribute so the more families that contribute (even a little bit), the more that the Atlanta Area Council can leverage. Recognizing that times are tough, give what you can afford. If you have been blessed, give what your heart dictates. Other than directly volunteer with our pack, giving boys a chance to participate in a quality scouting program is one of the biggest returns on investment for philanthropy you can contribute to. There are many levels of giving. For gifts above $300 there are special recognition mementos (usually a special patch to say thank you). For a glimpse of what Friends of Scouting is, please visit the Friends of Scouting site on the Atlanta Area Council Website: Friends of Scouting .

So come for the cake, entertainment and fun. Make sure you bring your cameras and enjoy the celebration.

Yours in Scouting

Pack 471 Leaders

Today was a great day at the Garrison Mill Speedway.  We had a packed field and a lot of races.  The races were fast and very close.  I was so proud of all the boys, siblings and parents for your creativity and your spirit.

Congratulations to all the medal and trophy winners, and remember – I am so proud of you all (and you should be also) for Doing Your Best with a great attitude!!!  You all deserve a BIG round of applause.

Today was a fun and happy day!

Official 2015 Pinewood Derby Weigh-in January 23-24

All cars that are weighed in will be held by the race officials until race day, so ensure your car is 100% complete when you come to the weigh in. Cars not checked in January 23-24th will not be allowed to race on race day.

Hope to see you there!

Pinewood Derby – January 25th, 1:00 – 3:00 pm

Racers! Start your engines!

This year’s Pinewood Derby competition will be held at Garrison Mill in the Cafeteria.

The race will be held from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday January 25th, and doors open at 12 p.m. This year, we will start with the Webelos, then move through the ranks to the Tigers, and finally the adults and siblings competition at the end. After that we will take the fastest cars from each Den and compete for the overall winner of the Pack.

Prior to the race, we will have a weigh-in on Friday Night, January 23rd, from 5-8 p.m. and again on Saturday morning, January 24th, from 8-11 a.m. at Lisa Wille’s Residence at 11675 Highland Colony Dr. Each car being raced needs to be checked in during one of the weigh-ins.

Remember the following guidelines for your car:

Maximum Height : 4.5 inches – overall height is a tech item (requirement)
Maximum Length : 7 inches – overall length is a tech item (requirement)
Maximum Width : 2-3/4 inches – overall width is a tech item (requirement)
Maximum Weight : 5.0 ounces – as measured on the electronic scale (requirement)
Maximum Wheelbase : 4-7/16 inches – wheelbase is a tech item (requirement)
Minimum Car Bottom-to-Track Surface : 3/8 inch – this is a dimension that will allow the car to clear the track’s raised lane keeper
Minimum Width Between Wheels : 1-3/4 inches – this is a dimension measured between the wheels along the axle centerline, which will allow the car to clear the track’s raised lane keeper.

The most important piece is that the car, with wheels, paint, any glue, accessories and weights, must weigh 5.0 ounces or less. If your car weighs more at the weigh in, you will have the opportunity to try to adjust the weight. Once it is weighed and checked in, the judges will hold onto the cars until race day, when you will have one more opportunity to apply graphite to the wheels before the race.

We hope to see you on race day!

Pack Meeting Tuesday December 16

Hello Pack 471!

On Tuesday, December 16th, we will be hosting our next Pack meeting at the GM Cafe, starting at 6:45 to 8:00 p.m. This month’s pack meeting will be movie night! Join us as we get ready for the Pinewood Derby in January.

At our last pack meeting, we asked our scouts to ask their parents for the opportunity to do some extra chores to earn $1.00 that we are asking each scout to contribute to go towards the purchase of a bicycle and helmet for a needy young boy chosen from the Garrison Mill Giving Tree. At the pack meeting we will be collecting the money from the extra chores.

We hope to see you there!
